TERRE HAUTE — Three Wabash Valley high school students and three Ivy Tech Community College — Wabash Valley students took top honors and cash prizes at the Fall Speech Competition on Nov. 14 at Ivy Tech Community College. Winners are:

High School Division

• First Place: Matt Jenkins, Terre Haute North Vigo High School

• Second Place: Grant Potts, Terre Haute North Vigo High School

• Third Place: Molly Powell, Northview High School

Ivy Tech Community College Division

• First Place: Alex King of Clinton

• Third Place: Mikah Zehner of Shelburn

First place speakers were awarded $300, second place $200 and third place $100 in the competition sponsored by Ivy Tech and the Alpha Phi Eta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Phi Theta Kappa is an honor society focused on scholarship, leadership and service. Its topic for research among members this year is “The Culture of Competition.” As a result of research and discussion around that topic, the society’s members chose to work with the Ivy Tech communication faculty to organize the competition.

“Our students, college and high school, compete for scholarships, grades and jobs, among other things in our culture,” said Leslie Stultz, dean, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences/Education at Ivy Tech. “Good communication and leadership skills will give our students a competitive edge.”

Students presented at the competition in semi-final and final rounds after being nominated by their peers from speech classes at their respective schools. Each delivered an informative speech of less than 10 minutes using visual aids.

According to Toni Shields, communications instructor at Ivy Tech, “The students’ speeches on topics from competition in schools to competition in the arts inspired the audience to think critically about the effects of competition in our culture.”
