St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and WTHI-TV congratulate Alison Grayless from Terre Haute South Vigo High School and Amanda Rolle from South Vermillion High School, the October winners of the Top Ten on 10 Scholarship Competition.
Grayless, the daughter of Mark and Wilma Grayless, is the president of SkillsUSA, which is a national not-for-profit organization serving teachers and high-school and college students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. This past year, she created a promotional bulletin board that placed first in the SkillsUSA state competition. That same project placed eighth in the nation.
An accomplished singer, Grayless is a member of Terre Haute South’s Show Choir and the Treble Choir. In addition, she spends a portion of her summers touring with the singing group Promise.
She is active in her church and youth group, serving in the church nursery and volunteering at the Light House Mission. This past summer, she was in Mexico for 10 days on a mission trip, and she spent three weeks as a camp counselor for a church camp.
Grayless also excels in the classroom. Her grade-point average at Terre Haute South has never fallen below 3.5, and she has been named to the Honor Roll every grading period during her high-school career. She looks forward to pursuing a degree in elementary education at SMWC.
“I am pleased to be a Top Ten on 10 scholar and I am looking forward to the college experience that St. Mary's has to offer,” Grayless said.
Amanda Rolle, the daughter of Owen and Mary Rolle, is a proven leader at South Vermillion High School in Clinton. In addition to serving as senior class secretary, Rolle is a member of the Student Council and is chairwoman of many committees, including the school’s blood drive committee. She also is a member of the Academic Superbowl Team, Yearbook Staff and Prom Favors Committee and serves as a Wildcat Kickoff Mentor and a front office assistant.
Rolle has participated in the Teen Student Leadership Academy, Achievements in Music, Youth Legislative Day, the St. Mary-of-the-Woods College Law Day, Youth for Youth, Relay for Life and the Rose-Hulman Math Contest. Her leadership continues through her involvement with softball and bowling.
She is active in the teen class of her church, playing piano for special occasions and assisting with youth Activities. In addition, she is a member of Youth Serving Youth, a small philanthropic organization based out of the Vermillion County Community Foundation, and she serves as a mentor/facilitator for the Junior High Leadership Academy.
Rolle also excels in the classroom. She maintains a 3.9 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society, has received Academic Excellence I and II and has been named to the Distinguished Honor Roll every grading period during her high-school career. She has been named to the National Honor Roll, Who’s Who Among American High School Students and has been recognized as the South Vermillion High School Student of the Month.
She looks forward to studying paralegal studies, history and psychology at The Woods.
“I’m excited that I have the privilege of receiving the Top Ten on 10 Scholarship,” Rolle said. “I can’t wait to attend SMWC!”
The Top Ten on 10 Scholarship Competition, sponsored by St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and WTHI-TV, is open to any female student enrolled in grade 12 in a public, private or parochial school in the WTHI viewing area. Female students in grade 12 who are home-schooled also are encouraged to apply. From October to April, 10 students are chosen to receive a $13,000 renewable SMWC scholarship. The monthly winner(s) are chosen based on academic records, leadership and community service roles, high school/community references and a written essay. From the 10 winners, two students are chosen to receive $20,000 renewable SMWC scholarships.
