Terre Haute South Senior Science Researcher Emma Sperry, a finalist in the Indiana Talent Search Competition conducted at Indiana University, Kokomo, in October, presented her research, “Investigation of Variation in Serotonin 1e Receptor Genes in a Polymorphic Species,” at the National Association of Academies of Science and the American Junior Academy of Science Feb. 13-17 in Boston, Mass.

Sperry presented her research both as a poster session and an oral presentation before the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. AAAS is the world’s largest scientific society dedicated to advancing science globally.

Sperry was chosen by the Indiana Academy of Science to become a fellow in AJAS, the only honor research society for high school scientists in the United States. While in Boston, Sperry was inducted as a lifetime fellow of the AJAS along with 135 of the top high school science researchers across the nation.

Besides presenting her research, Sperry spent a day touring the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, meeting and talking with the top scientists in the nation.

Sperry was accompanied by her Terre Haute South Science research sponsor, Melanie Huber, South science department chairperson and chemistry teacher.
