Summit aimed at afterschool, summer programs

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana Department of Education and the Indiana Afterschool Network are joining together to host the state’s second annual summit designed specifically for afterschool and summer program providers. The two-day summit, scheduled for March 12 and 13, features keynote speakers from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and National Afterschool Association, along with special learning intensives in project-based learning/NASA education, college readiness and public policy.

There will be more than 50 workshops on curriculum, leadership, best practices and more topics led by experts in the field. Five hundred leaders from youth organizations, schools, universities, businesses, state agencies and nonprofits will be in attendance. Following the first day of the summit, guests are invited to the Afterschool March Madness Reception in the NCAA Hall of Champions for drinks, appetizers and games sponsored by Kid’s College.

The event will be at JW Marriott, 10 S. West St., in Indianapolis.

Speakers include:

• Tony Bennett, Indiana’s Superintendent of Public Instruction 

• Leland Melvin, NASA associate administrator and former astronaut 

• Dr. Paul Young, president and CEO of National Afterschool Association 

Cost is $50 for all attendees ($35 for 21st Century Community Learning Centers). To register visit www.indianaafterschool.org. Space is limited.
