  Morning Update: Crews dig through night after deadly Oklahoma twister

  A monstrous tornado at least a half-mile wide roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods and destroying an elementary school with a direct blow as children and teachers huddled against winds up to 200 mph. At least 51 people were killed, and officials said the death toll was expected to rise.

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North Vigo Class of 1992

Terre Haute North Vigo Class of 1992 is staging its 20th class reunion on July 27-28.

At 8 p.m. July 27, there will be a casual gathering at Al’s Sports Bar at Imperial Lanes. On July 28, dinner, DJ and fun will all take place at the Ballyhoo, which will be closed to the public, from 7-11 p.m. The cost is $20 per person.

Hotel discounts are available for those traveling. For more information, to RSVP, and to arrange payment, contact Danny Pike at (812) 382-4094.

West Vigo High School Class of 1962

The 1962 class of West Vigo High School is having its 50th class reunion beginning with a sock hop at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 3 in the West Vigo High School Gym.

West Vigo classes of 1961-1965 are invited. Those interested in attending should call Glenda Kinser at (812) 824-8886 or Linda Plew at (812) 533-1661.

The Great Gary Hoare will be the DJ for the evening, playing tunes from the 1960s.

St. Bernice High School

St. Bernice High School reunion will take place July 1 at the firehouse.

A carry-in dinner will be at 1 p.m. Drinks and tableware will be furnished. A business meeting will follow. Classes from 1929 to 1961 will be acknowledged at the 62nd meeting of the Alumni Association.

  Kaleigh Basan has been named valedictorian and Jeff Woods and Kendall Davies are co-salutatorians for the Turkey Run High School Class of 2013.

• BRUCE’S HISTORY LESSONS: The Civil War: Means versus ends

  The Civil War began this week (April 12) in 1861 with the shelling of the Union fort, Fort Sumter, by Confederate troops in South Carolina. Four years later that war ended with the total defeat of the Confederacy, and in the war’s wake many historians have concluded that a Union victory was inevitable given the huge advantages that the Union North had in terms of manpower, weaponry, manufacturing and industrial capacity.
