Ambulance ride: Ivy Tech simulator designed to scale

TERRE HAUTE — Ivy Tech Community College Wabash Valley has purchased a special training tool for students in the Paramedic Science program that will allow them to take an ambulance ride without ever leaving their classroom in Terre Haute. The simulator is an ambulance designed to scale that provides real-life experiences for students as they learn through simulated scenarios.

Barry Nicoson, chairman of the Paramedic Science program, said the simulator has been in use since the last few weeks of November, and it is already producing improvements in student training. The simulator is being paired with the recently purchased wireless mannequin called Meti-Man to give students a full-fledged simulation experience.

Students practice packaging and transporting Meti-Man to the ambulance and then follow techniques all the way through successful transport of the patient to the hospital. Interactive learning is enhanced because cameras on the ambulance capture what is occurring inside and project the activity onto a video screen in the classroom.

Nicoson said that student enthusiasm has been strong and that an Ivy Tech student designed the decal placement for the ambulance. Nicoson is most proud of the Patient Advocacy decal, which embodies his philosophy as a teacher and a 9-year paramedic for the Terre Haute fire department. He wants his students to remember to put patients first.

“With this simulator, we have a very visual element to showcase our program and provide the best hands-on experience for our students,” Nicoson said.

Julie Will, dean of the School of Health Sciences, agrees that the simulator is a valuable asset. “Simulation is the way of the future and this equipment makes our students more skilled to meet the demands of the local workplace,” she said. “Barry will be using it also as a continuing education tool for the EMS community; so the ambulance simulator will benefit our students and the community.”
