Students win writing contest, surprise visit

Three Vigo County elementary students wrote winning essays and won a surprise visit from an Indiana State University coach and player.

Indiana State University and Partners Advancing Literacy Skills had its fourth annual writing contest for kindergarten through sixth grade students during Family Learning Day. ISU emergent literacy students had children write a short essay on “ISU basketball players work hard at school and on the court. Write about a time that you have worked hard.”

The 46 ISU students then did a blind evaluation of the about 150 entered essays to choose the winners from each group, which were separated into kindergarten and first, second and third, and fourth through sixth grades.

Each winner received a surprise visit from a basketball coach and player, a signed poster for their classmates and tickets to an ISU basketball game for the entire class.

Surprise visits to the winning students were:

• Kindergarten winner, Monte Walker, Nov. 4, Farrington Grove Elementary. Walker wrote about learning to ride a two-wheel bike.

• Fourth grade winner, Sean Beaver, Friday, at Sugar Creek Consolidated Elementary. Beaver wrote about building a tree house and working with his little brother.

• Second grade winner, Will Cutter, Monday, Sugar Grove Elementary School. Cutter wrote about playing football.
