Mrs. Hopkin’s and Mrs. Swander’s 6th grade classes have ended their first 9 weeks rotation in Health with a week long presentation on drug prevention given by Deputy Sean Trevarthan of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department. It is an outstanding part of our Health curriculum taught through our Family and Consumer Education department.
Our 8th grade classes have centered their attention on constructing pillow cases and “fun pants.” Skills such as measuring, sewing with a serger, pressing , and safety are emphasized throughout their nine weeks course of study. Clothing care and learning how to tie a tie are also included.
Seventh grade classes direct their attention to foods and nutrition. It is through this course students learn basic food preparation techniques, cooking terms, interpreting recipes, measuring , team planning, safety, sanititation, manners and etiquette .
Mrs. Hopkins also volunteers her advisory time to teach selected and interested students how to construct quilts. The group is known as “Quilts For Injured Soldiers.” When the quilts are completed they are sent to Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. to be distributed to injured soldiers returning from their tour of duty.
Mrs. Swander is sponsor of the HCMS K-9 Crew. The Crew is made up of 13 selected students who help raise funds for the Terre Haute Police Department K-9 Units. Several projects are being planned for this school year including selling Santa Grams , breakfasts for students, and a mixer in February.

Seventh grade students Allison Crick and Rosalie Shanks were selected as Colts Junior Broadcasters in an essay contest during the month of October. They both submitted an essay to the Indiana Dairy Council about themselves and how they prepare for their day at school. The victory in the contest allowed these girls to spend the day at the Colts practice facility on Oct. 17. While at the facility, they toured the locker rooms, the meeting rooms and the playing fields. They were also able to compete in punt, pass, and kick competitions on the practice facility and announce real Colt highlights. Great job girls!

BRUCE'S HISTORY LESSON: Freedom of religion — beliefs and actions
Because religious faith is, arguably, the quintessential example of our right to privacy, to say nothing of its prominent place in our First Amendment, throughout our history court cases involving the free exercise of religion have been handled with great trepidation and with particular care. One of the milestone “free exercise” religion cases, Davis v. Beason, was decided by the Supreme Court this week (Feb. 3) in 1890.
