Riverton Parke spell team headed to finals

The Riverton Parke High School Spell Bowl team will make a return visit to the state finals competition at Purdue University on Nov. 14 after winning the area contest at South Vermillion High School on Oct. 19.

The Panthers placed in the top five teams in Indiana and will compete once again against defending champion Northeast Dubois, Morgan Township, Kouts, and Washington Township in the Class 4 division in the 25th annual competition at Purdue’s Loeb Playhouse.

Competing are Hillary Dressler, Hannah Byers, Jenna McFarland, Josh Helton, Kalyn Rose, Kylie McNeill, Jessica Stanfield, Sarah Carty, Angela Frink, Darren Swick, Lacey Henderson, Makenzie Haltom and Shannon Cottrell. The team is coached by Michael Lunsford.

“We are excited to go back to the state finals, “Lunsford says, “but we know we really have our work cut out for us. Northeast Dubois has won this contest nearly 20 times. We’ll work hard and be ready to compete.”

The contest is sponsored by the Indiana Association of Secondary Principals and Purdue University.
