Seniors ready for final bows in North fall drama play

TERRE HAUTE — Eleven seniors at Terre Haute North High School will play key roles in the fall drama, “I Remember Mama.” The play will be performed on at 7 p.m. Thursday, at 3 p.m. Nov. 1 and 8 in the school’s auditorium.

Senior year is always exciting. But, for a few seniors, it will be a tearful goodbye to the loving theater department they have grown to love.

“We all rely on each other,” said senior Brittany Keilly, who plays the role of Aunt Sigrid in the play. “These are some of the craziest, kindest, and most accepting people in the school, and being a part of that is an amazing feeling.”

Keilly is also serving as the lighting director for the production.

Senior Savanna Richardson is featured as Mama after appearing in past productions of “Blithe Spirit,” “Something’s Rotten in the State of Denmark,” and “The Dining Room.” Richardson is also helping with the costumes and set for this show.

Other seniors with key roles in the play include Simon McNair as Uncle Chris, Kari Kirchner as Aunt Jenny and hair/makeup worker, and Eric Watson as Papa.

Being involved in the Drama Club has provided experience that several seniors hope to pursue in college or a possible theatrical career. Richardson and McNair hope to study theater arts in college.

“I Remember Mama” was written by John Van Druten and is adapted from the book” Mama’s Bank Account,” written by Kathryn Forbes. The drama tells the story of Katin (junior Abby Cunning) writing a book on her Mama (Richardson) during the difficult time period of the 1920s.

Directing the production is Cathy Sponsler, Terre Haute North’s speech and theater arts teacher. This is Sponsler’s sixth year directing the school’s fall plays after leading “The Philadelphia Story,” “The Crucible” and “The Dining Room.”

“I chose [“I Remember Mama”] because it has a large cast, is a great story, and it is a neat period piece,” Sponsler states. “The students are always enthusiastic to work. They’re always 100 percent ready.”

Tickets

Tickets are $6 per person and can be purchased at the ticket booth near the auditorium before each show.
