Civil engineering professor James Hanson and political science professor Terrence Casey were recognized for their teaching excellence and scholarship, while Environment Health and Safety manager Jake Campbell was honored for service to the institute in special awards presented during Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s 134th commencement on May 26.
Hanson received the Dean’s Outstanding Teacher Award for representing the highest standards of teaching excellence. He is a fellow of the American Concrete Institute, and has received awards from the American Society for Engineering Education and ACI for excellence and innovation in teaching.
“Dr. Hanson is praised by his students for engaging all students in the classroom and exemplifying high standards for academic and professional accomplishment,” said Bill Schindel, chairman of the board of trustees’ Academic Affairs Committee. “Student comment that Dr. Hanson is passionate about teaching, makes sure no one falls behind and demonstrates a willingness to help outside the classroom.”
Hanson’s scholarly interests include engineering mechanics and structural design of reinforced concrete. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cornell University, was a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Army Engineering Center and completed his doctorate in structural engineering from Cornell. He joined the Rose-Hulman faculty in 2002.
Casey, head of Rose-Hulman’s Department of Humanities and Social Sciences since 2009, is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of British politics and the political economy of the United States and Great Britain. He has written three books exploring the impact of Margaret Thatcher’s government in regional economic change in Britain, the legacy of Tony Blair’s term as British Prime Minister and how the financial crisis affected politics and economics in the U.S. and United Kingdom.
“Dr. Casey translates the benefits of his scholarship activities back to the classroom,” pointed out Bill Fenoglio, chairman of the board of trustees. “He has offered courses across all of the major subfields of American government, political theory, international relations and comparative politics.”
Casey is the executive director of the British Politics Group of the American Political Association and has organized two special international conferences on British and American politics. He researches the interaction between economic policy, culture and economic performance. Recently, Casey has turned his attention to the effects of the financial crisis and the response from governments.
Casey earned his bachelor’s degree from Towson University, and received his master’s and doctorate from George Washington University. He joined the Rose-Hulman faculty in 2000.
Campbell, a member of the staff since 2006, has worked extensively with faculty who teach and students who take courses in technical and professional communication. He is also a responsible and conscientious steward of the environmental health and safety of the campus.
“Jake’s attention to detail and dedication to the health and safety of all campus members make him a very valuable institutional resource,” President Robert Coons said. “He truly exemplifies what outstanding service represents on campus.”

Students from 15 schools in west central Indiana competed in the 34th annual d’Arlier Trust Spring Art Show on April 19-25 in Veedersburg. Four Riverton Parke High School students won a total of nine awards in six of the show’s 20 categories.
