Riverton Parke sophomore earns Eagle Scout status

TERRE HAUTE — Riverton Parke High School sophomore Avery Moore has earned the ultimate award for any Boy Scout: Eagle Scout. Moore, the son of Alan and Anita Moore of Coloma, is a member of Wabash Valley District Troop 467, Rockville. Moore was honored at a ceremony on Dec. 19 at the Crossroad Council in Terre Haute.

As part of his Eagle Project, Moore replaced 13 missing headstones for gravesites in the old section of the Coloma Cemetery. To do that, he had to locate the names of the original gravesites, some of which that dated back to the Civil War era. Several of the gravestones were for participants of the Underground Railroad. Moore began the project in May 2012, and completed it on Nov. 4. Eleven Scouts, church members, family and friends assisted with the project.

Moore attends the Coloma Friends Church. He has earned 63 merit badges, has participated in scouting for 10 years, and has attained the “Order of the Arrow.” He is an experienced scuba diver, and also participates in tae kwon do. Moore has also been a senior patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, quartermaster, scribe, den chief and chaplain.

Moore plans to attend Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology or join the military. He participates in FFA, FCA, 4-H, and is a member of the Riverton Park baseball program. He is also in the school’s National Honor Society, and has been on the honor roll, student council, and been selected as a “Student of the Month.”

Avery will be attending the 2013 National Jamboree in West Virginia in July. He has been elected quartermaster of his new troop (D238), which will represent Indiana at the jamboree. More than 40,000 boys will be attending nationally.
