Vectren hosts energy safety program

TERRE HAUTE —

For the fifth consecutive year, Vectren Energy Delivery is partnering with the National Energy Foundation to bring Energy Safe Kids, an energy safety education program, to schools.

Based on fourth-grade curriculum, the program brings interactive, hands-on classroom presentations and energy safety booklets to fourth-grade classrooms. Teachers are also encouraged to schedule a Live Wire demonstration as a follow-up lesson. This outdoor activity offers an exciting safety lesson about electricity as a trained Vectren line specialist demonstrates the power of a live electrical line and perches above the crowd in a bucket truck.

Energy Safe Kids presentations have already taken place in the Wabash Valley at West Vigo, Ouabache, Hoosier Prairie, Rio Grande, Davis Park, Franklin, Meadows and Fayette elementary schools.

“It is important to educate both our customers and our children about natural gas and electric safety,” said Brandy Spainhoward, senior communications specialist and program coordinator. “Through this program, students will learn about electricity and natural gas properties, as well as what to do when they notice a downed power line or suspect a natural gas leak. It is a fun, memorable way to educate children on serious safety issues.”

This fall, Vectren and NEF plan to provide approximately 180 interactive, hands-on presentations in nearly 150 schools throughout Vectren’s Indiana service territories: Vectren North and Vectren South.

Participating students learn about the basics of natural gas and/or electricity. Each student receives an Energy Safety booklet that encourages him/her to “Live Smart and Take Action” by following safety precautions at home and at school. Each participating teacher/classroom receives teaching materials that include a teacher guide, accompanying CD and energy instructional posters.
