TERRE HAUTE —
Indiana Blood Center and Terre Haute North Vigo High School football team are combining efforts to help boost blood supply to meet the needs of hospitals across the state. The blood drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, July 12, in the gym at North Vigo High School is part of a state-wide competition among other high school football teams throughout Indiana.
The teams participating in the competition met for a kickoff meeting at the Colts Training Facility in Indianapolis in May. Six members of the North Vigo High School team attended the meeting, which also included a leadership conference with new Colts’ Head Coach Chuck Pagano and a tour of the training facility. At the end of July, the high school team with the most blood donors will win a trip to Anderson for a closed practice at the Colts Training Camp.
“This is a great opportunity for our players to learn the importance of community service,” said Chris Barrett, head coach of the North Vigo High School Patriots football team. Because Indiana Blood Center supplies both Union Hospital and Regional Hospital right here in Terre Haute, it is truly a great way to give back to our community and to help save lives.”
Not only will Patriot players host the drive, but they will be participating as well. In fact, the player who recruits the most donors receives top honors and a prize from Indiana Blood Center. Fans will have the opportunity to donate alongside football players as they raise their sleeves to ensure stable blood supplies throughout the summer season.
Indiana Blood Center works with local hospitals to provide blood supplies for patients in need of any number of treatments; such as those fighting cancer, having surgery or experiencing a medical emergency. During the last year, Indiana Blood Center provided nearly 8,000 blood components to Union Hospital and Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
“Schools typically provide 30 percent of the blood needed by Indiana Blood Center for area hospitals, which means the summer months are a challenging time for blood donations,” said Shelly Shearer, Indiana Blood Center field representative. “We’re thankful these students are stepping up to donate, and that they are getting the community involved in the process. It’s a fun way to save a life.”
