Casey-Westfield Jr. High receives set of Caudill Book award nominees

CASEY, ILL. — Casey-Westfield Jr. High has been selected as one of 41 libraries to receive a set of Rebecca Caudill Book award nominees for 2012-13 from the Illinois School Library Media Association/Library Book Selection Service Endowment Fund.

More than 270 libraries applied to receive one of the Reader’s Choice award grants this year.

Sara Richardson, Casey-Westfield Jr. High library aide, was responsible for applying for recognition as a Rebecca Caudill School.

The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award is given annually to the author of the book voted most outstanding by students in grades four through eight in Illinois schools.

The award is named in honor of Rebecca Caudill who lived and wrote in Urbana, Ill., for nearly 50 years. It recognizes her literary talent and the universal appeal of her books, which have touched the hearts of children and young adults.

The purposes of the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award are:

n to encourage children and young adults to read for personal satisfaction.

n to develop a statewide awareness of outstanding literature for children and  young people and to promote a desire for literacy.

n to encourage cooperation among Illinois agencies that provide educational and library service to young people.

According to Richardson, CWJH students will be able to participate in the program by reading at least three books from the Rebecca Caudill nomination list throughout the year. Students will then get to vote for their favorite book in February.

“By receiving this grant our library will receive copies of this year’s book nominees. While students are required to read only three books to participate, they will be encouraged to read the entire collection,” Richardson said.

The 2011 Rebecca Caudill award winner was “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins and the 2012 winner was “Powerless” by Matthew Cody.
