TERRE HAUTE —
Seventy-eight middle and high school students and a Terre Haute North Vigo High School teacher have been honored for academic excellence and excellence in teaching by the Vigo County School Corp. and First Financial Bank.
Now in its 29th year, the Academic Excellence Award was established to recognize students who have the highest grade point average in their grade level. This average is determined by the second, fifth, eighth and 11th trimester in grades nine through 12. In grades six through eight, the selected students have the highest cumulative grade point average for their grade level determined at the end of the third grading period. The students receive a plaque and have their name engraved on the permanent plaque displayed in their respective schools.
The 2012 top academic achievers at Terre Haute North Vigo High School were: 12th grade, Wesley Cornwell; 11th grade, Angela Hanson and Amber Maness; 10th grade, Grant Potts and Mallory Sanders; and ninth grade, Jayden Alley, Samuel Gehman, Ashley Godar, Douglas Grim III, Spencer Grim, Maria Kline, Chelsea Lunceford and Caroline Potter.
Terre Haute South Vigo High School students receiving the Academic Excellence Award were: 12th grade, Mark Botros, Scott Noble, David Schmitz and Stephanie Thiede; 11th grade, Alexandra Crume, Joshua Gayso, Deborah Lee and Emma Sperry; 10th grade, Birchell Eversole and Katherine Senseman; and ninth grade, Carolyn Ber, Eleanor Carre, Michael Crowell, Spencer Danielson, Alissa Davignon, Evan Keiser, Joseph Mitchell, Shivani Purohit, Bradley Rowe and Anthea Weng.
West Vigo High School students honored for academic achievements were: 12th grade, Allison Hunt; 11th grade, Elizabeth McClone; 10th grade, Emma Auterson; and ninth grade, Chalen Chambers and Kyle Hackett.
Chauncey Rose Middle School students honored were: eighth grade, Nyxie Smith; seventh grade, Seaonna Michaels; and sixth grade, Antonio Thomas II.
Honey Creek Middle students receiving the Academic Excellence Award were: eighth grade, Jacob Douglas Schmidt and Luke Devan Yeagley; seventh grade, Nellie Custis Brown and Avery Marie Sparenberg; and sixth grade, Jeremy Michael Rusk and Anthony Daivd Weng.
Otter Creek Middle School students honored were: eighth grade, Christopher Grassick, Anna Nagy and Elizabeth Trausch; seventh grade, Hannah Bunch, Caroline Goodwin, Caaveh Siahmakoun, Shelby Taylor and Taylor Turner; and sixth grade, Trevor Revesz, Alec Theisz and Amanda Waldbieser.
At Sarah Scott Middle School, students receiving the award were: eighth grade, Xavier Edwards; seventh grade, Sunny Straw; and sixth grade, Michelle Long.
West Vigo Middle School students honored were: eighth grade, Mary Curley; seventh grade, Kelsey Farris; and sixth grade, Emily Macak.
Students at Woodrow Wilson Middle School receiving the Academic Excellence award were: eighth grade, Timothy Collett, Logan Grim, Megan Harvey, Jing Lin and Morgan Morris; seventh grade, Savannah Limcaco, Megan McCreery, Karen McGuire, Yzabel Tio and Janan Zaher; and sixth grade, Kimberly Collins, Peyton Hochhalter, Isabelle Holder and Hannah Ireland.
During a special presentation at Terre Haute North Vigo High School, Marianne Allen was presented with a plaque, a crystal mantle clock and a check for $100 from First Financial Bank in recognition of her selection as Teacher of the Year. Allen, an English teacher and department chairwoman, also received the Vigo County School Corp. Excellence in Education Award in 2010 and NCTE Outstanding High School Teacher of English in 2001 from the National Council of Teachers of English. Her name was added to the Teacher-of-the-Year traveling plaque that was presented to the school.

Riverton Parke academic bowl team finishes strong
The Riverton Parke English academic bowl team finished as runner-up at the state finals competition on May 4 at Purdue University, and the social studies team swept through all of its last eight questions without a miss to finish third in the contest.

Kaleigh Basan has been named valedictorian and Jeff Woods and Kendall Davies are co-salutatorians for the Turkey Run High School Class of 2013.
Graduation ceremonies will be in the high school gymnasium at 11 a.m. May 25 with 36 students receiving their diplomas. -

Riverton Parke students bring home art awards
Students from 15 schools in west central Indiana competed in the 34th annual d’Arlier Trust Spring Art Show on April 19-25 in Veedersburg. Four Riverton Parke High School students won a total of nine awards in six of the show’s 20 categories.

Parke Adult Tutoring Service awards mini-grant
The Parke Adult Tutoring Service has awarded a mini-grant of $270 to Riverton Parke English teacher Mike Lunsford to purchase reading materials for his students.
