Deming
Due to the unusually warm weather throughout the month of December the students were able to keep going outside for recess and use their pedometers. We racked up several thousand more steps as a school but the classroom with the most steps for the month was Mrs. Wiesneth’s fifth grade class. The individual class winners for Kindergarten were Haley Farner in Mrs. DeWitt’s, Shiana Bright in Mrs. Karras’ and Jordan Grayless in Mrs. New’s room. The first grade class winners were Bradley McCracken for Mrs. Byrd, Daniel Waltrip in Mrs. Cox’s and Bryson Carpenter for Mrs. Southard. The second grade winners were Savanah Hepler for Mrs. Childress and Evan Burns for Mrs. McCarty. The third grade winners were Donavan Alkire for Mrs. Casserly, Janya Haine for Ms. Mains and Rachel Sawyer for Mrs. Millington. In the fourth grade it was Autumn Dickens for Ms. Walker and Georgia Jones for Mr. White. The winners for the fifth grade classes were Dylan Couch in Mrs. Thomas’ class, Jonathon Welty in Mr. Turpen’s class and Kendra Ford for Mrs. Wiesneth. Keep up the great work.
In PE, we are just finishing our jump rope unit which is a great healthy heart activity. It is perfect to keep our hearts healthy and our bodies active. This unit leads us in to more healthy heart activities for the month of February. February is National Heart Association Month and it is the perfect time to learn how to keep our hearts healthy throughout the years. The students will be learning how the heart works, what we need to eat to keep it working correctly and what activities we can do to keep it healthy. This is always a very exciting learning time in PE class.

DeVaney
February is planning to be a busy month at DeVaney Elementary School.
During the entire month, DeVaney staff members will look for students displaying the character trait “Determination,” defined as working hard toward a goal. When caught demonstrating this trait, students’ names are added to a bulletin board stating: Scooby says, “DOO the right thing!” At the end of the month, each classroom teacher selects a winner. An overall school winner will be honored by Mayor Duke Bennett in a program at City Hall on March 22nd.
Our PTO hosted a Family Movie Night on February 3, 2012. They showed the movie, Gnomeo & Juliet. Food and drinks were available for families to enjoy while watching the film. “Gnome voting” took place and raffle tickets for a movie themed basket were sold.
Mrs. Nutter, Mrs. Cole, Mrs. Leinenbach, and Mrs. Spelman are having an IREAD-3 informational meeting on February 9, 2012. The meeting is open to third grade parents who want to learn about this high stakes test. The test takes place March 19-21.
A Math and Science Family Night is coming to DeVaney too. It will take place on February 16, 2012. There will be a Science Fair, math activities, and cookies. Students will bring science experiments to share and families will participate in an Amazing Math Race. The fun never ends.

Fayette
The students and staff at Fayette have been very busy. We culminated our 2nd grading period by having an assembly in the gym. Students with perfect attendance, those who brought up grades, as well as student’s who received all A’s were recognized. Mr. Lorick, Director of the Terre Haute Human Relations Commission, was in attendance to present 3 second grade students with awards for winning a Diversity writing contest. The mayor’s character awards for November, December, and January were also recognized. We are currently providing extra practice for the ISTEP+ and the new IREAD3 testing. Some students in fourth and fifth grade are working after school on Wednesday and Thursday. Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade are working on their math skills at breakfast time on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Also, some 3rd graders are working on their language arts skills from 7:30-8 two days a week.
We have many fundraising projects going on at Fayette also. The students will begin selling magazines this week, in order to raise money to buy much needed items for our school. Once a week through the month of February, we will be having a bake sale at lunch time. The money collected is going to Riley Children’s Hospital. We are also continuing to raise money for Success by Six - United Way Campaign and Share Your Love Food Drive.

Sugar Grove
Ball State University in Muncie holds a prestigious mathematics camp for advanced students each summer called Big M (Ball State Institute for the Gifted in Mathematics). Only 28 students from across the state of Indiana are selected to attend. Sugar Grove is very pleased and proud to announce that a student from our school has been selected to attend Big M during the summer of 2012. That student is Jim Goulding. Jim is a 5th grade student in Mrs. Scamihorn’s class. In addition to qualifying to attend the camp, Jim received a full scholarship to cover the cost of camp tuition. Congratulations, Jim. The Sugar Bears are very proud of you.
Fifteen boys and girls from Grades 4 and 5 competed in the Sugar Grove Spelling Bee on Friday, January 6: Maddie Auler, Gabrielle Brewer, Jacob Bryan, Athena Cline, Carli Cottee, Jacob Dennis, Jennifer Garcia-Israel, Caiden Jones, Kadrien King, Ella Lautzenheiser, Wyatt Neff, Abigail Samuels, Kenyon Sholty, Jan Tomaszewski, and Loki Westgard. Grade 5 students with an interest in geography were given the opportunity to participate in the National Geographic Bee during the month of January. Students were asked a series of challenging questions. Here are a couple of examples: The world’s longest coral reef is located in the Pacific Ocean off the northeastern coast of which continent? (Australia) Barrier islands help shelter a nature reserve on Apalachicola Bay, an arm of what large gulf? (Gulf of Mexico)
The following students made it into the final round: Hallie Baker, Heaven Briley, Jim Goulding, Logan Harris, Alex McGuire, Elizabeth Nicoulin, Kenyon Sholty, and Jan Tomaszewski. Hallie Baker was our champion, and she took a rigorous written exam that will be scored at the state level. Congratulations and good luck, Hallie.
