South senior receives Hoosier Heroes award

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South Vigo High School Senior Zachary Moore was awarded a $2,000 scholarship at the Hoosier Heroes Celebration on May 10 at UIndy Hall at the University of Indianapolis.

Moore nominated James Mann as his Hoosier Hero in the Education category for his outstanding work as a teacher who specializes in giving students opportunities to experience new ideas and ways of learning. Moore is one of 10 Hoosier Heroes winners selected from almost 400 nominations submitted by high school juniors and seniors across the state. Mann will have an additional $2,000 scholarship awarded in his honor to Terre Haute South Vigo High School.

The event not only honored the student winners and their heroes, but also celebrated Scholarship Week in Indiana. WTHR-Channel 13 Community Affairs Director Angela Cain hosted the awards ceremony where $40,000 in scholarships was awarded to Indiana high school students.

“With the rising cost of tuition, scholarships are an increasingly important resource for those aspiring to obtain a postsecondary degree. The Hoosier Heroes scholarship program grants access to those essential funds while providing students the opportunity to honor Hoosiers whose accomplishments have inspired them,” said Don Setterlof, executive director of Indiana Dollars for Scholars.

Indiana Dollars for Scholars, a program of Scholarship America, is a state network of community-based, volunteer-operated scholarship foundations. The mission of Indiana Dollars for Scholars is to expand access to higher education and to encourage the educational preparation of Hoosier students.
