Indiana State University’s Office of Diversity will present “Latinos beyond Reel: Challenging a Media Stereotype” at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 in Hulman Memorial Student Union, Room 421.
In the final installment of the “Eye on Diversity” video series, Theresa Ortega, staff advisor for Indiana State’s Hispanic Student Association, will lead a discussion examining how U.S. news and entertainment media portray Latinos.
Latinos are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population, and among the most diverse — accounting for one-sixth of all Americans and tracing their origins to more than 20 countries. They are also a rising force in American politics. Yet across the American media landscape, the reality and richness of the Latino experience are virtually nowhere to be found.
A 2012 poll found that “media portrayals of Latinos and immigrants are fueling rampant negative stereotypes among the general population that are diminishing perceptions of these groups,” according to the National Hispanic Media Coalition, which commissioned the poll.
Drawing on the insights of Latino scholars, journalists, community leaders, actors and directors, producers of “Latinos beyond Reel” uncover a pattern of gross misrepresentation and gross under-representation — a world in which Latinos tend to appear, if at all, as gangsters and Mexican bandits, harlots and prostitutes, drug dealers and welfare-leeching illegals.
Eye on Diversity series events are free and open to the public.

State recognizes counties for improving college success
Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers recognized 26 Indiana counties for working to increase the percentage of Hoosiers with education beyond high school. For more than 40 years the Indiana State Police have been giving young people an up close look at law enforcement through its youth camps program.

The Riverton Parke English academic bowl team finished as runner-up at the state finals competition on May 4 at Purdue University, and the social studies team swept through all of its last eight questions without a miss to finish third in the contest.

Kaleigh Basan has been named valedictorian and Jeff Woods and Kendall Davies are co-salutatorians for the Turkey Run High School Class of 2013.
Graduation ceremonies will be in the high school gymnasium at 11 a.m. May 25 with 36 students receiving their diplomas. -
