Southwest Parke Community School Corp. librarian Joan Lunsford has been awarded a $10,000 grant by the Lilly Foundation Teacher Creativity Fellowship program. Lunsford is the librarian at Montezuma and Rosedale elementary schools. She also teaches reading. Her project, “Following the Trail of American Poets,” will be conducted in the summer.
Lunsford’s project will include visiting the homes of several famous American poets — including Robert Frost, Edwin Arlington Robinson and Emily Dickinson — attending writers’ workshops, and writing and publishing her own poetry. She plans to share her experiences with her students, as well as teach and encourage them to write and read poetry.
Currently in her 34th year at Southwest Parke, Lunsford works with students from kindergarten through sixth grade. She attended Indiana State University and holds degrees in English, speech and library services.
