State superintendent candidate Ritz visits Southwest Parke schools

MECCA — The Democratic Party candidate for superintendent of Public Instruction, Glenda Ritz, visited with Southwest Parke Community School Corp. teachers recently, briefly outlining her goals to support teachers and administrators while establishing a more balanced use of testing in the classroom.

Ritz told teachers that schools already under the state’s new school takeover plan are being operated by private corporations with their profit margin in mind, that the number of required performance-based tests Indiana students are taking is out of hand, and that there is a stark contrast between her and the current state superintendent, Tony Bennett.

In a statement released to the press in July, Ritz said, “Just think how much we could have improved academic performance with a commitment to properly funding education, using the state's surplus for classroom instruction, keeping teachers on the job and having a superintendent of Public Instruction who works on consensus, not confrontation.”

Ritz is a “Teacher of the Year Award” winner at two different schools; a Golden Apple Award winner; a National Board Certified Teacher (one of only 155 in Indiana); and, was credited for leading her school as it became a national “Blue Ribbon School” and an “Indiana 4-star School” by strengthening the school-wide reading program. She is currently the International Baccalaureate Primary Years program coordinator and media specialist at Crooked Creek Elementary School, in Indianapolis.
