Riverton Parke freshman Cheyenne Gibbons believes that if something needs to be done, she just might have to be the one to do it. For that reason, Gibbons volunteers some of her time to regularly attend the meetings of the Montezuma Park Board, and has done so since she was a sixth grader.
“I’m a kid. I have always liked playing in parks, and since the parks are there for the kids, adults need to know what kids need there. I go to the meetings so they [the board] can get input from a child’s perspective,” Gibbons said.
“We have been trying to get other young people involved,” Park Board Secretary Penny Cox said, “but Cheyenne has been faithful and we appreciate her so much.”
Gibbons hopes to attend college to study to be a paralegal or a pediatric nurse. She lives in Montezuma with her mother, Darla Kelsheimer. She participates in all board fundraisers, and went to Indianapolis with board members to speak with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources about a grant proposal.
The board meets on the first Sunday of each month at 4 p.m. at the Montezuma Firehouse and has accomplished great things, including a new shelter at Aztec Park, a blacktopped walking path of more than a half-mile, and the addition of new playground equipment. The board is currently working on a Veterans Memorial, the placement of benches around the walking path, and tree planting at Aztec Park. The board also worked to get a new basketball court at Reeder Park, updated the shelter, and obtained new playground equipment there. It has also applied for a grant to upgrade the camping facilities and restrooms at Reeder.
“I appreciate what the board members do for children in the community, and I just want to acknowledge that,” Gibbons said.
Board meetings are open to the public and members look forward to suggestions from the citizens of Montezuma. The next meeting is at 4 p.m. Sept. 9. A representative from Tree City USA will speak about planting the proper trees in parks. Riverton Parke academic bowl team finishes strong
The Riverton Parke English academic bowl team finished as runner-up at the state finals competition on May 4 at Purdue University, and the social studies team swept through all of its last eight questions without a miss to finish third in the contest.

Turkey Run High School names top 2013 students
Kaleigh Basan has been named valedictorian and Jeff Woods and Kendall Davies are co-salutatorians for the Turkey Run High School Class of 2013.
Graduation ceremonies will be in the high school gymnasium at 11 a.m. May 25 with 36 students receiving their diplomas. -

BRUCE’S HISTORY LESSONS: The Civil War: Means versus ends
