Panthers honored for academic excellence

TERRE HAUTE — Sixty-one Riverton Parke High School students were honored April 18 at the 26th annual Academic Excellence Banquet in the school cafetorium. Southwest Parke Community School Board member Leslie Peacock Batty, and teacher-writer Mike Lunsford served as the night’s guest speakers.

Batty, a 1996 graduate of Riverton, told the students that it wasn’t a top priority to know what their college majors would be before they attended school.

“The main thing is that you find something you love to do,” she said. Batty graduated from Indiana State University with associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in nursing.

Lunsford, a 33-year teaching veteran at RP, is also a writer for the Terre Haute Tribune-Star and author.

He reminded students that their high school and college diplomas are not their only future goals and discussed “6 Lessons For Life” that could apply to anyone.

Following the meal and the speakers’ comments, RP principal Dennis Moody introduced the 61 honorees who qualified for the program by maintaining either all A’s or all A’s and one B. Moody said he was “proud that many of our students have maintained academic excellence despite their busy schedules.” Assistant principal Kyle Kersey assisted in the program.

Among those honored were seniors Hillary Dressler, Thorin Meyers, Ashley Stone, Ashley Sister, Shelby Baysinger, Sheldan Falls, Courtney Dressler, Alyssa Allen, and Fawn Mitchell. Each received $100 checks.

Students who were honored for their first year in the program were Logan Pollard, Bailey Cobb, Isabella Swaim, Jeannie Phillips, David Kuk, Josh King, Tabor Blair, Dakota Milner, Megan Smith, Michaela McGlynn, Whitney Branson, Katharine Fischer, Karlie Leitgabel, Brogan Thomas, Jessica Graves, Lindsey Higgins, Charles Roach, Courtney Austin, Kallie Helton, Hannah Feuquay, Nicole Crombie, Jodi Smith, Heston Maloney, and Natasha Leonard.

Students who were recognized for their second year in Academic Excellence were Hannah Carty, Catie Butler, Odin Meyers, Wyatt Lawson, Megan Dressler, Kathleen Sinclair, Taylor Guoli, Kelly Dressler, Shelby Bennell, Brianne Huxford, Brandie Bolliard, Micaela Reeves, Savannah Arnold, Molly Noorlag, Emily Virostko, Colton Vermillion, and Miranda Dressler.

Panthers who have been honored three times are Sara Dickey, Tyler Crumrin, Kevin Dalia, Heath Rohr, Matt Haltom, Adam Wilson, Kalib McBride, Kori Wood, Page Fetter, and Quinten Carter.

Also recognized at the banquet for their parts in the program were the maintenance staff, school treasurer Angie Gilstrap, school secretary Cheryl Walters, Consumer Science teacher Sue Ellen Cleghorn, National Honor Society sponsor Sande Bemis, and many National Honor Society members and volunteers who served the meal to the guests and honorees.
