Valley middle schoolers ready for MATHCOUNTS

TERRE HAUTE — Weeks of early-morning and after-school problem-solving sessions for about 100 Wabash Valley middle school students will culminate on Saturday in the regional MATHCOUNTS competition at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades will compete in three rounds: Sprint, testing quickness to solve problems; Target, testing problem-solving skills; and Team, testing team working abilities.

Twenty-four students advance to the Countdown Round, a game show-type challenge in the Hatfield Hall Theater, starting at noon, which showcases a student’s ability to quickly solve math problems. The awards are scheduled to begin at 12:45 p.m.

Participating schools will be Chauncey Rose, Honey Creek, Otter Creek, St. Patrick’s, Sarah Scott, West Vigo and Woodrow Wilson, all from Vigo County; and Greencastle Middle School from Putnam County. Each school can have 10 students participate.

The top two teams will advance to the state competition on March 10 at Rose-Hulman. Other teams and students may be added following comparing scores of all regional sites.

The MATHCOUNTS regional competition is organized by Rose-Hulman and the Francis Vigo chapter of the Indiana Society of Professional Engineers.
