Woods offers permaculture course

TERRE HAUTE — The staff at White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, a ministry of the Sisters of Providence, has collaborated with Indiana University at Bloomington and Collins Living Learning Center for a permaculture field-study course at St. Mary-of-the-Woods — Learning From Nature: Permaculture course.

Since May 23, 29 students have been attending classes and doing hands on work in the organically grown gardens and Reflection Garden and with the alpacas at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. The course ended June 3.

Permaculture is the art and science that applies patterns found in nature to the design and construction of human and natural environments. Applying these patterns and principles to the built environment helps achieve a sustainable living system.

Instructors are David Haberman, Department of Religious Studies at Indiana University; Rhonda Baird, a Permaculture practitioner and teacher from southern Indiana; and Peter Bane and Keith Johnson. Bane publishes Permaculture Activist magazine, and is the author of The Permaculture Handbook. He and Johnson are long-established permaculture teachers and designers who own and operate Renaissance Farm at Bloomington.

“Permaculture is a set of principles and techniques that aims to create ecologically sound and economically prosperous human communities. This course gives students innovative conceptual tools and the chance to view that future from as many angles as possible,” Haberman said.

Bane said they are trying to teach the students a new paradigm, an ecological paradigm. He hopes the class will shift the way they see the world and give them a new way of looking at the world.

“They’ll start seeing connection in landscape and the people,” Bane said. “We’re not just encouraging them to see things differently, but to also act. We’re training them to be ecological designers. To look for systems that don’t require large amounts of input that can support us, the communities and the people.”

Catherine McLaughlin, of Hammond, is participating in the class.

“This is a whole new way of thinking and doing things. It focuses on the holistic. It’s invaluable knowledge,” she said.

Sam Armstrong, of Westfield, will be a sophomore at IU this fall.

“The course itself has been an opportunity to learn a lot spiritually,” he said. “The setting has been very conducive to spiritual development, as well.”
