Fund honors Cameron, creates grant

TERRE HAUTE — Donations are being accepted at the Vigo County Education Foundation to support a new grant fund established to honor former standout athlete and current standout coach Cam Cameron.

The goal of the fund is to provide an annual grant to a Vigo County School Corp. teacher for promoting leadership among his/her students.

The grant honors Cameron for his outstanding leadership which has led to a successful coaching career in college and professional football.

The initial gifts to create the Cam Cameron Leadership Grant Fund were donated by the law firm of Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos and Newlin and the Ellis Law Firm in Terre Haute.

Superintendent Dan Tanoos announced establishment of the new grant at ceremonies to retire Cameron’s athletic uniform number Feb. 26 during halftime of a basketball game at Terre Haute South Vigo High School.

According to Tanoos, “The Vigo County School Corporation has graduated some of the finest leaders in our country. Cam Cameron rises to the top of that list. Cam was a very good student, an exceptional student-athlete, and above all, an outstanding person. The development of the Cam Cameron grant through the Vigo County Education Foundation is a way to thank him for his dedication to our students and staff.”

Cameron graduated from South Vigo High School in 1979 where he was an outstanding student and excelled as a member of the football and basketball teams. Cameron received the Trester Award for mental attitude in 1979 when he helped lead the South Vigo High School basketball team that played in the final game of the Indiana High School Athletic Association tournament for the third consecutive year.

Cameron graduated from Indiana University in 1983 with a degree in business. His professional football coaching experience has included being head coach of the NFL Miami Dolphins and as offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers. He is currently offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. Cameron has also served as head coach at Indiana University and as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan.
