Merit Scholarship winners announced

TERRE HAUTE — More than 2,500 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities were announced May 23 by National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.

Three students in the Wabash Valley were among the scholars. They are:

• Margarete Anna Kline of Clinton

Probable career field: Medicine/Science Research

South Vermillion High School

National Merit Indiana University Bloomington Scholarship

• John A. Hensle of Terre Haute

Probable career field: Social Science/Business

Terre Haute North Vigo High School

National Merit University of Evansville Scholarship

• Andrew D. Keiser of Terre Haute

Probable career field: Education (Music)

Terre Haute South Vigo High School

National Merit Michigan State University Scholarship

These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. An additional group of scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2012 competition to about 4,800.

This year, 197 higher education institutions are underwriting Merit Scholarship awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sponsor colleges and universities include 117 private and 80 public institutions located in 45 states and the District of Columbia.  

NMSC named recipients of corporate-sponsored awards on April 18 and winners of National Merit $2,500 Scholarships on May 2. Additional recipients of college-sponsored awards will be announced on July 9. By the conclusion of this year’s competition, about 8,300 academic champions will have won National Merit Scholarships worth more than $35 million.
