Riverton Parke students enjoy trip to Costa Rica

TERRE HAUTE — For six Riverton Parke High School students, Spring Break 2012 proved to be an adventure of a lifetime. They experienced an eight-day guided tour of Costa Rica, in Central America.

The six students — seniors Aaron Hill and Elizabeth Dickey; juniors Heath Rohr and Sara Dickey; and freshmen Rachael Austin and Tanner Gilbert — were accompanied by four adults, including Dilia Smith (the RP Spanish teacher) and her husband, Eric, as well as parents Christine Gilbert and Jodi Rohr.

The group spent the first two days in the capital city of San Jose, where they experienced the culture and cuisine of the country. While there, they trekked to an active volcano. The students also visited a culinary class, where they had the hands-on opportunity to cook traditional Costa Rican food.

The next two days were spent in the town of Puerto Viejo on the southern Caribbean coast. Activities there involved a horseback tour of the beach and forest. The students also had the opportunity to enjoy swimming in the ocean and spending time on the beach. From Puerto Viejo, the group traveled to the northern coast to the Costa Rican national park, Tortuguero — a remote area, accessible only by boat. This area is the principal breading grounds of sea turtles. The group also experienced the great variety of wildlife in the park, such as caimans, iguanas, three species of monkeys, and many varieties of birds.

The group also had the opportunity to visit the Catie Institute, which is a botanical research facility. They traveled back to San Jose on their final day, where they visited the rainforest. The students were able to explore the rainforest canopy from the safety of gondolas. On the trip’s final evening, the students enjoyed a farewell party at the Costa Rican restaurant El Mirador. The students enjoyed learning the Costa Rican dance known as the Torito. The next morning the students enjoyed local shopping before returning to the United States.
