Terre Haute North steps back in time with ‘Cinderella’

. — A glass slipper paves the way for intrigue and true love in the classic fairytale “Cinderella” which the Terre Haute North High School Music Department will showcase in a musical production at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the school’s auditorium.

General admission tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and youths. Tickets will be available at the ticket office before each show and seating will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. As an added attraction before each show, there will be horse-and-carriage rides available for $5.

Cinderella tells the story of a young woman’s struggle to overcome the betrayal of her cruel stepmother and two stepsisters, through the help of a fairy godmother. Cinderella overcomes life’s struggles to meet and fall in love with the handsome prince at the kingdom’s fancy ball. However, her wonderful night is short-lived and she must return to her life as a peasant. She leaves behind a glass slipper which becomes the focus of the prince’s goal to find his true love.

The production features music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II which include such songs as “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful,” “A Lovely Night” and “It’s Possible.”

Senior Kelsey Hamilton and junior Ethan Brewer play the lead roles as Cinderella and the Prince.

“[Cinderella] has been my favorite character since I was six years old. It’s the classic love story that everyone loves,” Hamilton said.

Brewer added, “I look up to the prince’s character. Everyone would like to be royalty.”

The cast also features Selanda Brown as the Godmother; Savanna Richardson as the Queen; Caroline Dultz as the Stepmother; Abby Cunning and Kari Kirchner as the two stepsisters; Jordan Allen as the King; Eric Watson, Darren Saunders and Eliot Utterback as the Knights of Knowbility; Jillian Turner as the Little Girl and Simon McNair as the Chef.

“It’s a wonderful, well-known and magical production. I can’t wait to watch what the kids do,” stated Michelle Azar, who is co-directing her first Terre Haute North production. She is assisted by Cathy Sponsler, whose favorite part of the production is seeing Cinderella dressed up and ready for the ball.

“I am excited to see the magic of the show, the horses and the fairy godmother,” Sponsler said.

Kurt Perry is the musical accompanist and Rodney Foster is the orchestra director. Cate Walsh is the choreographer and Lyndsay Hoff is the dance captain.

About the pit orchestra, Foster states: “We can be kind of goofy in the pit because we’re not seen. But, it’s really fun and the students are great volunteers.”
