DeVaney

Mrs. Boehler’s 2nd grade class sponsored a stuffed animal drive from January 2nd-January 13th. During the two week period, 916 stuffed animals were collected. All of the stuffed animals will be donated to local emergency agencies to provide to children in times of need. This community service project was in conjunction with Ms. Loveall’s class at McLean High School. Thank you to everyone that helped support this community service project.

Have you ever visited a Wax Museum? If not, here is your opportunity. Mrs. Boehler’s class recently researched famous individuals. On Thursday, February 2nd, these famous individuals will “come to life” as students share their research while dressed as the famous individual. This event is funded by a Vigo County Education Foundation Grant and Mrs. ReaJane Linville.

We would like to invite DeVaney families and friends to our Math and Science Night which will be held on Thursday, February 16th from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. During this time, you will be able to view creative science fair projects, play Math Bingo and even take part in the Amazing Math Race. We hope to see you there.

Fayette

The Fayette third grade classes of Mrs. Laswell and Mrs. Vislosky collaborated to provide the entertainment and refreshments for the monthly FESCO (Fayette Elementary School and Community Organization) meeting on Monday, January 9, at 6 pm in the cafeteria. Parents were welcomed by principal, Mrs. Janel Bonomo. Information was given on third grade testing that is coming up. The third graders were in their snowman attire then performed their rendition of, “Frosty the Snowman” and “The Snowman” for everyone's enjoyment. The budget was discussed and a 25 dollar drawing was given out as a door prize. The lucky winner was Matt Likens. He received an AMC gift certificate. Cookies and brownies were made earlier in the day by the third grade children. Bottled water and hot chocolate were also available. Parents were thanked for coming and encouraged to sign up to help with the annual Snowflake Mixer. The meeting was adjourned.

Rio Grande

This month Rio Grande 2nd graders were treated to a field trip to the Terre Haute Children’s Museum. Thanks to proceeds from the 2011 “I Can't Believe It’s Not a Gutter” Benefit Bowl, the Vigo County Education Foundation enabled all Vigo County second-grade students the opportunity to visit, explore, and learn all about the many exciting venues the museum offers. For several of the children and their families, it was their first time at the new location and building. After a quick museum orientation by museum staff members, our second graders and their families were ready to explore and have fun.

The children as well as many of their parents were able to directly interact with many of the museum's exhibits like the “cloud machine” and the “tree house.” A favorite exhibit enjoyed by all was the “Run with the Animals” exhibit. In this exhibit, students tried to outrun “animals” on a wooden raceway (represented by lights sequenced to the speeds of various animals such as cheetahs and squirrels).

The “bubble machine” also produced a lot of hungry people. Louise’s Cafe, adjacent to the museum, served up tasty lunches to our hungry crew. From the looks on our students’ faces, everyone had an enjoyable experience. I over heard many saying they couldn’t wait for their next museum visit. The museum is located at 727 Wabash Avenue, at the corner of 8th Street and Wabash Avenue in downtown Terre Haute.
