South students travel to New York City

TERRE HAUTE — Twenty-nine Terre Haute South Vigo High School students traveled to New York City April 1-4.  Highlights of day one were visiting Times Square, touring the United Nations, paying respects at the 9/11 Memorial, and dining at Mickey Mantle’s Restaurant.

While in the United Nations, the students learned about the Security Council, the General Assembly and the many exhibits advocating peace. The exhibits on IED’s, the Holocaust and atomic warfare were particularly moving. The 9/11 Memorial featured remembrances of the men, women and children who died on Sept. 11, 2001, and Feb. 26, 1993. The twin reflecting pools are the largest man-made waterfalls in North America.

Highlights of day two included viewing the Statue of Liberty, investigating Ellis Island, walking miles in Central Park, watching “Ghost: The Musical” on Broadway, and dining at the Hard Rock Café. Every student was given the opportunity to learn about the Stairs of Separation at Ellis Island. While in Central Park, the students saw Wollman Rink, Tavern on the Green, Strawberry Fields, Bethesda Fountain, The Mall and its figures honoring writers, and the statue of Balto.
