CRANE —
Junior high and high school students from across southern Indiana participated April 11 in the 29th Annual Team Crane Science Fair at Naval Support Activity Crane.
More than 125 participants submitted their self-made projects for a chance to win awards and cash prizes from multiple sponsoring organizations and private donors.
Team Crane is committed to promoting this event and associated Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics programs that spur student interest in careers that will cultivate the workforce for the next generation.
More than a dozen employee organizations worked together to assist in the planning and registration for this year's fair. The overwhelming support from many Team Crane employees, including 40 who served as onsite judges, ensured the event's continued success.
Federally Employed Women presented awards for the three best female entrants, the Association of Old Crows presented two awards to projects that best represent Electronic Warfare and the American Society of Naval Engineers presented two awards for Best Engineering Principles.
Students were also eligible for honors from the Office of Naval Research and the Jackson Awards, which were presented to five schools in each division that werre best represented at the fair. The Jackson Awards are named in honor of James Jackson, a retired educator from Carlisle, who has supported the science fair for the past 27 years.
Students from 11 area schools participated in the annual event with 66 awards presented to 50 students.

BRUCE’S HISTORY LESSONS: Montgomery Meigs establishes Arlington National Cemetery
This week (June 15) in 1864, Brig. Gen. Montgomery C. Meigs, who had been appointed Quartermaster General of the Union Army in 1861, established Arlington House, the former home of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, as a cemetery for the Union’s soldiers. Today Arlington National Cemetery is America’s national military burial ground.
