Marshall Youth Network kicks off fundraising

TERRE HAUTE — MAYN, the Marshall Area Youth Network, has designated May through August as its annual fundraising campaign period. CAMPAIGN to MAYNtain is important to the sustainability of this youth organization, now in its 18th year. MAYN has been making a difference in the lives of youth by facilitating positive youth development and networking with other organizations, promoting strong families, and supporting school efforts. In 2011 alone, more than 1,100 volunteer hours were invested in mentoring and preventive programs for youth.

MAYN’s Career-Mentoring program helps junior high and senior high students strengthen social, communication and interpersonal skills and provides powerful motivators for completing high school and setting future goals. The “Lunch Buddy” program at the elementary school level utilizes trained volunteers to offer quality mentoring time during the lunch hour with students. More than 50 students have teamed up with mentors this school year.

The Marshall Leadership Team provides workshops on leadership and expands awareness of the opportunities that are available to high school students. MLT brings together youth organizations to provide leadership skills and positive role modeling. MLT works with our leaders for tomorrow and by working collaboratively optimizes youth opportunities for developing a sense of community responsibility and “ownership.”

MAYN also offers after school programming during the school year, “Girls Are Powerful” and “Boys Are Cool.” The only requirement to participate in the program is to be in fifth or sixth grade. The program content is based on the identified needs of the age group. Another program provided is “Movie with MAYN” when the entire South Elementary School is invited to watch a movie and enjoy a snack.

MAYN relies solely on local donations from the community and funding from the United Way of the Wabash Valley. Assistance is needed in sustaining the distinctive programming. MAYN’s goal is to raise $6,000 this year. Please note, MAYN is a 501C (3) organization and all donations are tax deductible. Contact the MAYN office at (217) 826-2900 for more information. Mail donations to the MAYN office at P.O. Box 278 Marshall, IL 62441.
