College savings campaign kicks off statewide

TERRE HAUTE — Students in Clay, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties are joining students across Indiana to launch Learn More Indiana’s 2012 Cash for College campaign this week.

Eighty percent of students who attend college receive financial aid.

“The campaign will help students of all ages, K-12, college students and adults, save and pay for college,” explained Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers. “Activities around the state will provide all sorts of practical assistance. For example, the FAFSA Friday webinar on Feb. 10 will offer assistance with financial aid forms, helping students remain eligible for scholarships. We’re also launching a smartphone application for the Indiana College Costs Estimator.”

Indiana’s regional Twenty-first Century Scholar support sites will be helping students in the program prepare for higher education by hosting student and parent meetings this winter and spring. They will also be helping seniors complete the FAFSA before March 10.

Other events across the state include a FAFSA Friday webinar at www.FAFSAFriday.org at noon and 6 p.m. on Feb. 10. It will feature a panel of financial aid experts to answer questions about the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid in real-time. The Indiana College Costs Estimator generates a student’s expected net cost of attending an Indiana college at www.IndianaCollegeCosts.org.

Students and parents can learn more about the campaign and free resources at www.CashForCollegeIndiana.org. Kindergartners through college seniors can also enter to win $529 for college in an Indiana CollegeChoice 529 Savings Plan, a tax-free account.

Additionally, College Goal Sunday opens in 40 locations across the state to provide one-on-one FAFSA assistance. College Goal Sunday is from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 12 at Ivy Tech Community College-Wabash Valley. Visit www.CollegeGoalSunday.org.

Questions may be directed to the Wabash Valley Regional Support Site at Indiana State University by calling (812) 237-3627.
