Riverton class visits Wolfe studio, Swope

TERRE HAUTE —

The Riverton Parke senior honors humanities class spent Nov. 2 visiting the art studio of sculptor/painter Bill Wolfe and the Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute. The class is studying the elements of writing about art and is taught by Mike Lunsford.

As he did a year ago, Wolfe spoke to the students about finding a passion in life. He has done just that, as he is now well known throughout the Wabash Valley for a long list of accomplishments as both a painter and sculptor.

Wolfe is currently completing the third panel of a four-panel mural about Vigo County history that will appear in the rotunda of the Vigo County Courthouse. He also is working on three sculpting projects, including a massive 15-foot Larry Bird sculpture that will be placed near Indiana State University’s Hulman Center.

“I guess I had my start in the arts playing with the clay from the banks of Raccoon Creek,” Wolfe told the students. “I discovered that I wanted to make things out of the stuff.”

Wolfe spent much of his childhood in the Mecca and Coxville area before heading to Clinton for high school and Indiana State University for his college education.

The students also spent considerable time at the Swope, taking in works by American painters Edward Hopper, Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Andy Warhol and George Luks. The class was particularly drawn to the work of John Rogers Cox, a Terre Haute artist who acquired many of the Swope’s prestigious pieces as its first director.
