Rose to welcome record number of freshmen

Class to have most female, international students in history

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is preparing to welcome the largest freshman class in its history, with 615 students being attracted to the college’s excellent reputation as well as the expanding career opportunities in engineering, science and mathematics.

The size of the incoming freshman class isn’t the only superlative for the group. It also will have the most female students; most international students, coming from 10 different countries; and continued high-quality academic credentials.

“The skills Rose-Hulman teaches inside and outside of the classroom are being recognized as world class, and we are pleased that so many bright young minds have chosen to pursue their college education with us,” stated James A. Goecker, vice president for Enrollment Management. “The increasing number of international students indicates that being ranked the best in the United States resonates throughout the world.”

For 13 consecutive years, Rose-Hulman has been rated the top undergraduate engineering college in the nation. The ranking is based on a national survey of deans and senior faculty conducted by U.S. News & World Report for its college guidebook. Rose-Hulman’s emphasis on undergraduate education has also been recently recognized by The Princeton Review, which cited six of the Institute’s professors for this year’s Best 300 Professors book.

Rose-Hulman received a record number of applications for this year’s freshman class, and a record number of campus visits were made by prospective students and families.

Goecker believes there is growing interest among young people who desire to solve today’s global problems as engineers and scientists.

This year’s freshmen will be coming from 38 states, with the most ever coming from California, New York, Ohio and Illinois. The median class rank is in the 93rd percentile, nearly 20 percent are ranked first or second among those high schools that rank classes, the median SAT math and critical reading score is 1300, and the median ACT composite is 30.

Rose-Hulman has prepared to handle the large freshman class and returning students with a new 240-bed, 75,000-square-foot residence hall, opening in August on the west edge of campus, and five new state-of-the-art high-tech classrooms in Myers Hall. This will provide residence life and academic space for students.

The first members of the 2012-13 freshman class will arrive on campus July 15 when two groups begin the Fast Track Calculus and Fast Track Physics programs. These are intensive five-week courses intended for outstanding students to accelerate their careers at Rose-Hulman by earning 13 to 15 hours of academic credit, and starting sophomore courses in any major at the beginning of their first year on campus. Fast Track Physics is a new program.

The remainder of this year’s freshmen will arrive Aug. 24 to begin a new student orientation program. The 2012-13 academic year starts Aug. 30.
