One of America’s top college engineering educators, Richard E. Stamper has been named to serve as interim Dean of Faculty at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. His one-year appointment will begin on July 1.
A 1985 Rose-Hulman alumnus, Stamper returned to his alma mater as a mechanical engineering faculty member in 1998. He has served the past two years as Associate Dean of Professional Experiences, leading the Rose-Hulman Ventures program, and formerly was head of the Department of Engineering Management. He earned the Rose-Hulman Dean’s Outstanding Teacher Award in 2006, the Board of Trustees’ Outstanding Scholar Award in 2004 and the Ferdinand P. Beer and E. Russell Johnston Jr. Outstanding New Mechanics Educator Award in 2001 from the American Society for Engineering Education.
Recently, Stamper was among nine engineering professors profiled in the Princeton Review’s The 300 Best Professors book, recognizing top teachers in more than 60 fields from 122 colleges and universities across the nation. Rose-Hulman had two professors in the engineering category.
“As a gifted educator, an outstanding scholar and a trusted colleague, Rick is ideally suited to step into this position. He has a passion for Rose-Hulman and its faculty, staff and students, and he will provide strong leadership for the 2012-13 academic year,” said Phillip Cornwell, vice president for Academic Affairs.
In his new role, Stamper will oversee the academic department heads, the Associate Dean of the Faculty, the Associate Dean of Online Learning and Instructional Technology, the Registrar’s office and the Learning Center.
Stamper’s industrial experience includes positions as an area manager at Proctor & Gamble and as a design team leader at General Electric. He also spent one year at the Toshiba Appliance Engineering Laboratory in Yokohama, Japan as part of a technical exchange between GE and Toshiba. In 2004, he formed a small company to develop medical devices, and he holds two patents for halo orthoses, which are devices that are used to immobilize the cervical spine.
As a registered patent agent for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Stamper has served as an expert witness in both patent and product liability disputes. He is a registered professional engineer and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the American Intellectual Property Association and ASEE.
Stamper received his doctorate in 1997 from the University of Maryland, where he worked in the Institute for Systems Research, and he earned a master’s degree from Purdue University. He earned Purdue’s Outstanding Mechanical Engineering Alumnus Award in 2011.
