Students reproduce antique sampler

TERRE HAUTE — Once again, the stitchers of the Otter Creek Middle School Stitching Guild have earned a huge “well done.” The five seventh-graders have been reproducing an antique needlework sampler for the purpose of fundraising.

It all started with an antique sampler that contains an unusual motif always seen on samplers from the Bristol Orphanage of Bristol, England.

Over the past several years, the Stitching Guild has graphed and reproduced 11 samplers originally stitched at the Bristol Orphanage and currently housed in the Bristol Foundation Museum. Those samplers contained a particular Bible motif that is also featured in the current sampler being reproduced.

The latest sampler has now been graphed and stitched with help from several different people along with the Guild members, including Grace Bertsch, Hanna Bunch, Lauren Hamblen, Ryleigh Scott and Shelby Taylor.

The Guild members reproduced each stitch by hand to create an exact replica of the 1877 sampler originally stitched by Harriet Prew at the age of 11.

The Guild leader, Valinda Lowe Titus, is a teacher at Otter Creek Middle School and also a grapher, master stitcher and background researcher. The Guild used a special graph paper made just for them by Stephen Joseph of Terre Haute South Vigo High School.

Another South Vigo High School teacher, Sally Creason, is the master stitcher of the group and rechecks all graphing and stitches to ensure the group has recreated a faithful reproduction of the original work. Creason trained Titus in the area of needlework, and the two share many interests, including antique needlework and passing the historic art on to the students.

The Guild’s members were anxious to begin the matching of threads for this particular sampler as one of the colors was named Otter Creek by The Gentle Art, a maker of sampler threads.

The owners of the New Albany, Ohio, company have been longtime friends to the OCMS Stitching Guild, supplying them with threads for their reproductions, and inviting them to needlework functions to display their projects.

By summer, their graph will be available for purchase and immediate download through www.needleprint.blogspot.com, a British site owned by Jacqueline Holdsworth. All profits will go toward restoring the Bristol samplers owned by the Bristol Foundation.

The Guild is currently looking for local samplers to reproduce. For more information, or if anyone is interested in sharing a sampler to be reproduced by this group, contact Titus at vlt@vigoschools.org.
