TERRE HAUTE — Dalton Millikan is the 2010 Elks State Veterans Essay Contest winner. He first won at the local level at the Rockville Elks 2471 before winning the state contest. Dalton graduated from South Vermillion High School this spring and plans on attending Indiana State University this fall. His parents are Paul and Angie Millikan of Hillsdale.

On Aug. 4, the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics and Humanities opened its doors to the Class of 2012. The Academy is Indiana’s only public, residential school for high ability Indiana juniors and seniors and is located on the campus of Ball State University, Muncie. Admission is by application only, and acceptance is highly selective. The curriculum is college-level, rigorous and challenging. Nearly half the faculty possess a doctoral degree. Graduates of the class of 2010 were offered more than $9 million in scholarships, alumni from the previous 18 classes have distinguished themselves in fields ranging from fashion design to aerospace.

Sophomore Jennifer Poorman has been accepted to represent Terre Haute North Vigo High School and the community as a member of the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security (NYLF/NS): Exploring American Diplomacy, Intelligence and Defense in Washington, D.C.

The National Youth Leadership Forum nominates exceptional students from around the country to attend an experiential educational program. This program enables students to interact with prominent figures whom most only read about in the news.

Attending this program, which runs Oct. 5-10, will enable Poorman to further her interest in the field of history and reach her career goals of becoming a history/classics professor. Poorman, daughter of Kyle and Michelle Poorman, maintains a 3.191 GPA.
