Seniors Matt Haltom and Kori Wood have been named Riverton Parke High School’s “Wendy’s High School Heisman” award winners. Although neither was named a winner at the national level, both students appreciate the recognition for their hard work.
As stated on the program’s website: “Since 1994, the Wendy’s High School Heisman Program has honored more than 250,000 of the nation’s most esteemed high school seniors in partnership with the Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee. The leadership award-honorees are well-rounded young men and woman who excel in learning, performing and leading in the classroom, on the field and in the community.”
Haltom, the son of Greg and Debbie Haltom of Lyford, is still undecided as to a college choice, but intends to study financial services and business next fall. Haltom runs cross-country, is a member of
the Panthers’ basketball team and plays baseball
for Riverton Parke.
“It’s an honor to receive this award. Since I am a student-athlete, it means a lot to me. I take my classroom work as seriously as
I do my athletics,” Haltom said.
Haltom said his parents have encouraged him both in the classroom and in athletics. “They have always been there for me,” Haltom said. “I appreciate them pushing me in the right direction.”
Wood is the daughter of Bill and Sandy Wood of rural Rosedale. She plans to attend Purdue University this fall to study pharmacy. Wood plays basketball, manages the volleyball and track teams and participates in Academic Bowl. She is on track to be the valedictorian of her class.
“I’m glad all of the hard work of balancing athletic and academic careers has paid off,” Wood said. “The award just shows that all of the time I have invested in studying has prepared me for future adversities.”
Wood said she’s grateful to teachers she’s had over the years. “They’ve helped me reach my goals, and I appreciate that,” she said.

The Riverton Parke English academic bowl team finished as runner-up at the state finals competition on May 4 at Purdue University, and the social studies team swept through all of its last eight questions without a miss to finish third in the contest.

Students from 15 schools in west central Indiana competed in the 34th annual d’Arlier Trust Spring Art Show on April 19-25 in Veedersburg. Four Riverton Parke High School students won a total of nine awards in six of the show’s 20 categories.
