TERRE HAUTE —
Riverton Parke junior Heath Rohr became the school’s first state finalist in the Voice of Democracy contest, sponsored each year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Rohr, the son of Jodi and Anthony Rohr of Montezuma, finished fourth in the Indiana contest and was honored at a banquet in Indianapolis on Jan. 14.
The Voice of Democracy contest is a nationwide competition open to all students in the United States in ninth through 12th grade. This year’s topic was “Is There Still Pride In Serving In Our Military?” Entries began at the local post level. Once the student creates their essay and completes burning the audio version to a CD, they submit their typed version, the CD, and the Voice of Democracy entry form to their local participating VFW post by the Nov. 1 deadline.
Rohr also was honored on the district level by Lawton-Byrum VFW Post 972. His local sponsoring post was the Paul Taylor VFW Post 1752, in Rockville.
“It’s an honor to represent, not just the veterans I know, but veterans in my area and across the state,” Rohr said. “This contest was a great learning experience for me, particularly since I went to the state contest. I hope to do even better next year.”
Upon graduation next spring, Rohr is considering a career in the military or attending college to study military history. The winner of the national contest, California’s Kelsey Woo, was awarded a $30,000 scholarship.
