TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State University officials announced the new dean of the Cunningham Memorial Library recently.
Alberta Comer served as acting dean from September 2007 until June 2008 when she was named interim dean. She previously served as associate dean and head of the circulation department at the library.
“I am most confident that Alberta will be an excellent dean,” said Provost Jack Maynard in announcing the appointment Monday morning.
“She has the necessary experience and leadership skills to continue to move the library forward.”
Comer said she was pleased to be a part of ISU and the library.
“This is an exciting time for academic libraries as we integrate new technology and offer new services,” she said. “The library is a wonderful place in which to work — the library staff makes it a real joy to come to work each day.”
Being responsive to the needs of the students is one goal of the new dean.
“The students have asked that we be open more hours and this semester we are offering two days during finals week where we are open 24 hours,” she said. “We served breakfast to the students this morning at 5 a.m. and will do so again tomorrow morning.”
Comer has worked in a number of libraries, both academic and public, and has worked in a variety of locales such as Oklahoma and Germany. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana University.
