Lincoln Trail College unveils new certificate program, hosting martial arts classes

ROBINSON, Ill. — Lincoln Trail College in Robinson, Ill., has received approval to offer a one-year Health Information Management certificate beginning this spring.

The program, or HIM, will prepare students for careers reviewing medical records for accuracy with regard to treatment procedures and coding, preparing files for long-term storage, compiling statistics and data for use by other medical personnel, preparing medical reports, and providing medical information access to appropriate parties such as third-party payers and attorneys.

Graduates of the program may go on to work in facilities such as hospitals, clinics, health planning agencies, insurance companies, nursing homes, health maintenance organizations, and ambulatory care centers.

According to the Illinois Department of Employment Security, medical records and health information technician is one of the 20 fastest growing occupations in Illinois, with salaries ranging from $22,000 to $42,000.

The college will offer its spring sessions of Karate for Kids and Tae Kwon Do beginning Jan. 7, and continuing through May 14 in the Karate Room on north campus.

Andy Bradbury will lead the martial arts classes, which focus on self-defense and promote discipline and physical fitness.

Two sessions of Karate for Kids will be offered: 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays and 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays. Fees are $45 for the 6 p.m. class and $65 for the 7 p.m. class.

Tae kwon do classes will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. College credit is offered for those 14 and older. In-district students may be eligible for an Illinois Eastern Community Colleges night-time tuition discount if they are registered in four evening credit hours or less. Students not eligible to receive college credit may take the class on a non-credit basis. Cost is $80.
