TERRE HAUTE — March is Disability Awareness Month for the state of Indiana, and Indiana State University is sponsoring and hosting a variety of activities throughout the month to support and raise awareness.
ISU Disability Awareness Month activities are sponsored by ISU’s Blumberg Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Special Education in conjunction with the Cunningham Memorial Library. A variety of community and area organization activities are planned.
Friday through Sunday and March 16-18:
“The Boys Next Door,” a play written by Tom Griffin at Community Theatre of Terre Haute. A compassionate comedy about four mentally challenged group-home residents, their social worker, and mishaps that run the gamut from sentimental to slapstick. Genuine and funny, this production offers a look at an endearing assortment of characters as they strive for acceptance. Discover the magic of laughter and the power of love!
Monday through March 30: Display case promoting disability awareness in ISU’s Hulman Memorial Student Union.
Thursday: “Essentials of Reading Assessments Virtual Seminar‚” by Jan Hasbrouck, educational consultant, researcher, trainer and author in the field of reading fluency, coaching and consultation, and assessing and teaching struggling readers. She worked as a reading specialist for 15 years and has taught undergraduate and graduate courses as a university professor. This workshop will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the College of Education, Room 1121. The event is free, but contact Donna Leggett at (812) 237-2830 to reserve a space.
March 14: “Conference on Autism and Aspergers, and Serving Customers with Disabilities‚” sponsored by ISU’s Department of Social Work, Hamilton Center Inc., and the Blumberg Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Special Education.
The below events will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in ISU’s Hulman Memorial Student Union, Dede I, II and III. Registration is required. Call Ann Roy at (812) 237-3611 for more information or to register.
“Asperger’s Disorder & Autism Spectrum Disorder‚” and “Exiting the Shame Train‚” presented by Dena Gassner, MSW consultant. Gassner is the second of three generations of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder in her family. She has survived multiple misdiagnoses and resulting disabling pharmaceutical institutionalization. She also has survived mistaken labels including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, bipolar, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. With her son, Patrick, she is a politically active advocate for persons with disabilities in her home state of Kentucky.
“Service Providers: Serving Customers with Disabilities‚” and “Ensuring Access for Students, Faculty, Staff and Visitors with Disabilities‚” by Robin Jones, director of Great Lakes ADA Center at the University of Chicago.
March 14: “Response to Intervention: Strategies for Reading & Math Satellite Broadcast‚” presented by Sharon Vaughn, director of Texas Center for Reading & Language Arts, and Greg Roberts, director of Special Education Strand of the Center of Instruction; 1 to 3 p.m. in College of Education, 11th Floor Conference Room. This event is free, but call Donna Leggett at (812) 237-2830 to reserve a space.
March 15: ISU Film Series — “I Am Sam”; 6 to 9 p.m. in Cunningham Memorial Library, first-floor browsing area. This event is free and open to the public. Host speaker is Darlena Gentry, assistant executive director of the Wabash Independent Living & Learning Center.
March 16: “Collaborative Problem Solving to Support Struggling Learners”; 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Hulman Memorial Student Union, Dede I. Event is for ISU College of Education students in the areas of communication disorders, counseling and school psychology. Presenters include: Leah Nellis, director of Indiana State University’s Blumberg Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Special Education; Renae Azziz and Ginger Miller, project coordinators for the Blumberg Center’s Collaborative Problem Solving Project.
March 21: “General Education Interventions for Institutes of Higher Education,” 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Hulman Memorial Student Union, Dede I. The event is for ISU College of Education student teachers in elementary and special education and will be presented by ISU alumna Angie McKinney, school psychologist for the Ripley-Ohio-Dearborn Special Education Cooperative in Sunman, Ind.; and Judy Wesley, consultant for Blumberg Center’s Collaborative Problem Solving Project.
March 21: ISU Film Series — “A Beautiful Mind”; 6 to 9 p.m. in Cunningham Memorial Library, first-floor browsing area. This event is free and open to the public. Host speakers are Robert Jacjay, ISU Department of Mathematics, and Tanya Jacjay, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Department of Mathematics.
March 22: “Polio: An American Story,” with David Oshinsky, 2006 Pulitzer Prize winner in history; 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Cunningham Memorial Library, first-floor browsing area. Oshinsky specializes in teaching 20th-century U.S. political and cultural history, at University of Texas at Austin. His articles and reviews appear regularly in the New York Times, Washington Post and Chronicle of Higher Education. This event is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow his presentation.
March 24-25: Indiana Special Olympics 2007 Men’s State Basketball Tournament; 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., College of Health and Human Performance (Arena) North and South Gymnasiums. This event is free and open to the public. The Special Olympics Indiana Men’s State Basketball Finals take place at ISU each year in March. Special Olympics Indiana’s roots go deep with Terre Haute and ISU, which have been the host of this tournament since 1971 and the host of the Special Olympics Indiana Summer Games since the early 1970s.
March 27: ISU Film Series — “Let me be Brave” (Emmy-winning CBS Sports special) about 12 Special Olympians and their attempts to climb Mount Kilimanjaro; 6 to 9 p.m. in Cunningham Memorial Library, first-floor browsing area. This event is free and open to the public. Host speaker is Don Rogers, ISU associate professor of recreation and sport management, who has been paralyzed and in a wheelchair since a motorcycle accident at age 21. He carried the Olympic torch through Terre Haute in 2002, and he designs challenge and rock climbing courses for the disabled.
March 29: “Try on a Disability,” 7 to 9 p.m. in Hulman Memorial Student Union, Dede I. As part of this event, which is free and open to the public, participants try hands-on activities that simulate cognitive and mobility impairments and interact with students from ISU who have disabilities. The event is presented annually by Delta Sigma Omicron, ISU’s student advocacy organization for persons with disabilities.

State recognizes counties for improving college success
Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers recognized 26 Indiana counties for working to increase the percentage of Hoosiers with education beyond high school. The counties are members of Indiana’s College Success Coalition, a statewide network focused on improving college access and success.

ISP offers youth an up close look at law enforcement
Most television viewers have seen at least part of a CSI or Law and Order episode. These shows seem to have spurred a new interest in law enforcement and forensics. For more than 40 years the Indiana State Police have been giving young people an up close look at law enforcement through its youth camps program.

The leadership team from Woodrow Wilson Middle School sponsored a week of giving to collect funds and supplies for the Terre Haute Humane shelter.

Riverton Parke academic bowl team finishes strong
The Riverton Parke English academic bowl team finished as runner-up at the state finals competition on May 4 at Purdue University, and the social studies team swept through all of its last eight questions without a miss to finish third in the contest.

Turkey Run High School names top 2013 students
Kaleigh Basan has been named valedictorian and Jeff Woods and Kendall Davies are co-salutatorians for the Turkey Run High School Class of 2013.
Graduation ceremonies will be in the high school gymnasium at 11 a.m. May 25 with 36 students receiving their diplomas. -

Turkey Run High School will hold its senior awards and recognition program at 7 p.m. Monday in the ELC room. A reception will be held from 6 to 7 p.m.

Riverton Parke students bring home art awards
Students from 15 schools in west central Indiana competed in the 34th annual d’Arlier Trust Spring Art Show on April 19-25 in Veedersburg. Four Riverton Parke High School students won a total of nine awards in six of the show’s 20 categories.

The Parke Adult Tutoring Service has awarded a mini-grant of $270 to Riverton Parke English teacher Mike Lunsford to purchase reading materials for his students.

BRUCE’S HISTORY LESSONS: The Civil War: Means versus ends
The Civil War began this week (April 12) in 1861 with the shelling of the Union fort, Fort Sumter, by Confederate troops in South Carolina. Four years later that war ended with the total defeat of the Confederacy, and in the war’s wake many historians have concluded that a Union victory was inevitable given the huge advantages that the Union North had in terms of manpower, weaponry, manufacturing and industrial capacity.
