Goals, Pride & Achievements

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology conferred degrees to 389 students recently at the college’s 132nd commencement exercise. The following 14 students from the Wabash Valley have earned degrees during the 2009-2010 academic year:

Michael Boland, of Terre Haute, the son of Thomas and Laurie Boland.

Michael Burris, of  Terre Haute, the son of Stephen and Lorraine Burris.

Daniel Clapp, of Rockville, the son of Leonard and Hwa Clapp.

Matthew Dillon, of Rosedale, the son of Robert and Kathy Dillon

Maria Fouts, of Terre Haute, the daughter of Mark and Mary Fouts.

Matthew Fouts, of Terre Haute, the son of Mark and Mary Fouts.

Matthew Gilbert, of Terre Haute, the son of Doug and Cindy Gilbert.

Tyler Johnson, of Cayuga, the son of Sandra Knauer.

Edward Mayhew, of Terre Haute, the son of Jim and Mary Mayhew.

Alexander Packard, of Brazil, the son of Richard and Ellen Packard.

Drew Paine, of Terre Haute, the son of Douglas and Linda Paine.

Kate Pippins, of Terre Haute, the daughter of Blaine and Terri Pippins.

Jonathan Rogers, of Terre Haute, the son of Renee Rogers.

Kristopher Stuckey, of Greencastle, the son of Robert and Doris Stuckey.

Emily Steiger, daughter of Tom and Kendy Steiger, is a recipient of the Dean’s Award for academic excellence during the spring 2010 semester at Colgate University, in New York, where she is a member of the Class of 2011.

She is a 2007 graduate of Terre Haute North Vigo High School, and is majoring in English at Colgate. She is on the Model United Nations team and is a member of Tri Delta sorority.

The United States Achievement Academy announced recently that Harley H.R. Davis, a student at Terre Haute North Vigo High School, has been named an All-American Scholar At-Large Award Winner. His name will appear in the All-American Scholar Official  Yearbook, which is published nationally.

The academy recognizes fewer than 10 percent of American high school students.

The academy selects All-American Scholar winners based on the standards of selection set forth by the academy. The criteria for selection are a student’s grade-point average, student achievements and a well-balanced schedule of academics and extracurricular activities.

Davis is the son of Ben Burris, Samra Burris and Colton Davis, all of Terre Haute. He is the grandson of the late Sam Parks and Jean Parks of Granite City, Ill., and the late Norm Burris and the late Rita Burris of Terre Haute.

Sigma Alpha Lambda announced that Yvonne P. Liffick of Terre Haute has recently been recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization at Indiana State University. Sigma Alpha Lambda is a national leadership and honors organization dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development, and lifelong professional fulfillment.

More than 6,000 students received degrees during the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s spring commencement ceremonies May 14-16, including Jeffrey James Kinne of Terre Haute, who received his doctorate in computer sciences.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and James Kass, the founder of Youth Speaks, shared speaking duties during ceremonies held in the university’s Kohl Center.
