Indiana State University is accepting applications for a new master’s program in occupational therapy.
Classes in the eight-semester, 81-credit hour program are scheduled to start in May 2013. The program will include 27 weeks of clinical experience and other service-learning opportunities, said Jeanne Sowers, associate professor of applied medicine and rehabilitation and director of the occupational therapy program.
Curriculum will focus on educating future health care providers who possess skills as occupational therapists, consultants, educators, managers and researchers, Sowers said.
“We are excited to be able to offer a program that will provide unique clinical experiences and will focus on quality care for rural and underserved populations,” she said.
Occupational therapy is among several new programs Indiana State’s College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services has developed in recent years to address shortages of health care providers.
Like all programs in the college, it will stress an interprofessional approach, said Leamor Kahanov, chair of the applied medicine and rehabilitation department.
“Students will be educated alongside physical therapy, athletic training, physician assistant and nursing students. The goal is to learn not only the profession but how to work as a team for the best outcome of the patient,” Kahanov said.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a need for more than 145,000 occupational therapists by 2020, a 33-percent increase from 2010.
Accreditation of the program is pending with the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education. Applications from prospective students will be reviewed beginning Dec. 1 with rolling admissions until all positions are filled.
