TERRE HAUTE —
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Homework Hotline program is teaming with the Terre Haute Children’s Museum on a free, two-year after-school project to encourage and enrich skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics among middle school students in the Vigo County School Corp.
The program, proclaimed “STEM Busters,” will begin this fall at Woodrow Wilson Middle School. Three two-hour sessions are planned in the school’s cafeteria on Sept. 26, Oct. 3 and Oct. 10. There is a limit of 50 students in the program. Registrations are being coordinated by Woodrow Wilson teachers Jeremy Johnson and Brian Sullivan.
Sessions at Sarah Scott Middle School are planned early in 2013, with other middle schools being featured next year.
Rose-Hulman students serving as Homework Hotline tutors will assist museum educators in presenting fun, hands-on programs based on the popular MythBusters television series. Lessons will offer sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students the opportunity to bust or prove the myths about design characteristics, structures and culinary arts. These activities may include an egg drop contest, suspension bridge building and packaging potato chips.
“These programs will reinforce science and math principles that students learn throughout the middle-school curriculum,” says Janie Szabo, assistant director of Rose-Hulman’s Homework Hotline.
“This new program will also allow students to work in a collaborative educational environment that builds relationships that could be helpful throughout their secondary educational careers. Our Homework Hotline tutors are looking forward to this exciting new educational adventure,” Szabo says.
School corporation administrators have been supportive of this pilot program.
Meanwhile, Rose-Hulman’s Homework Hotline toll-free telephone tutoring service is now available to help students throughout the Wabash Valley in grades six through 12 in understanding the complexities of math and science problems. Approximately 40 students are available from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Eastern time) on Sundays through Thursdays by calling 1-877-ASK-ROSE (1-877-275-7673). Math and science learning resources, test prep practice and study tips for students based on Indiana Academic Standards are also available at www.askrose.org.
