Rose men fall at Butler

BLUFFTON, OHIO — Bluffton relied on a balanced scoring attack and strong free throw shooting to down Rose-Hulman 76-64 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball Saturday.

Sophomore Austin Weatherford tied a career high with 22 points to pace the Engineers’ offensive effort.

Freshman Julian Strickland came off the bench to provide 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.

Other key contributors for Rose were sophomore Nate Gissentanner with nine points, three rebounds and three assists and sophomore Brenton Balsbaugh with seven points and eight rebounds.

Mychal Hill led the Beavers with 14 points and Will Pope came off the bench to add 12 points. Josh Fisher,

Free-throw shooting proved another key for Bluffton, as the Beavers finished 27 of 34 from the charity stripe compared to 10 of 16 for the Engineers.

Bluffton led 20-12 early in the first half before Rose-Hulman answered with a 14-3 spurt to gain a 26-23 lead with 2:30 left. Balsbaugh had six points and Strickland scored four during the spurt.

Rose pushed its lead to six points at 34-28 at the break on a last second layup by junior Spencer Harlan. The Engineers maintained the lead at 41-35 on a free throw by Gissentanner at the 17:00 mark. Bluffton battled back to tie the score at 48-48 with nine minutes left.

Bluffton gained a 53-50 advantage, then withstood Rose-Hulman’s rally with a 9-2 run to gain a 65-56 lead with 3:25 remaining. The Beavers then relied on their free throw shooting for another 9-4 run to secure the win.

Rose (9-4 overall, 3-3 HCAC) will travel to conference foe Anderson on Wednesday. Bluffton improved 9-4 overall and 2-4 respectively.

In women’s college basketball Saturday:

• Bluffton 58, Rose-Hulman 51 — At Bluffton, Ohio, Rose-Hulman rallied from a 14-point second half to close within four points in the final three minutes, but Bluffton held on to earn the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Senior Donna Marsh led the Rose offense with her 32nd career double-double. Marsh posted 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Freshman Heather Finnell contributed four 3-point field goals for 12 points. Freshman Kelsey Ploof pitched in with nine points.

Brittany Stegmaier paced Bluffton with 20 points. Lauren Hutton contributed 12 points and Brittany Lewis scored 10 for the Beavers.

Stegmaier buried a 3-pointer at the 13:07 mark to put Bluffton ahead 38-24, but a score from senior Nicole Klass and a 3-pointer from Finnell brought the Engineers within 38-29.

Bluffton pushed its lead to 47-36 before six straight points from Rose-Hulman brought the margin within 47-42.

Bluffton held the Engineers to just two points in the last four minutes and hit several free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Rose (4-9 overall, 2-4 HCAC) will play host to Anderson at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Bluffton improved to 5-8 and 2-4 respectively.
