METRO ROUNDUP: Engineers dominate HCAC honors

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman Institute student-athletes earned three Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards, in results released by the league office on Monday. 

West Vigo graduate John Burt was named HCAC Defensive Player of the Week and Eric Schaible the Special Teams Player of the Week in football, and B.J. Thompson earned Player of the Week honors in men’s soccer.

Burt returned an interception 20 yards for his first college touchdown, had 10 total tackles and made two key stops inside the 5-yard line to key Rose-Hulman’s win at Defiance. Burt had five solo and five assisted tackles, including a stop on the 3-yard line as time expired in the first half. 

On the season, Burt has 15 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups and one interception. 

Schaible punted six times for a 47.2-yard average, highlighted by a 60-yarder. He had punts downed at the 1- and 3-yard lines to keep Defiance in long fields. 

Schaible averages 42.4 yards per kick this season, with four inside the 20-yard line and four over 50 yards.

Thompson scored the game-winning goal in Rose-Hulman’s 3-0 victory over Millikin on Saturday. He also had the team’s lone score in a 2-1 loss to Illinois Wesleyan. 

For the season, Thompson leads the Engineers with two goals and has career totals of nine goals and one assist.

In other awards:

* Vigo County stars recognized — West Vigo graduate John Burt and Terre Haute North graduate Paige Cook are being recognized by the Exchange Club of Terre Haute for performances in their Rose-Hulman sports last week. Both will receive the club’s Athlete of the Week awards during the club’s luncheon meeting today at the Holiday Inn.

Burt’s weekend heroics are listed above. Cook had a 3-0 record in singles play and 2-1 mark in doubles matches to help the Engineers have a perfect week.

* Etling gets North Coast honor — Terre Haute North graduate Mary Kate Etling of DePauw is the North Coast Conference volleyball Player of the Week as she helped the Tigers extend their winning streak to 11 during a 5-0 week.

Etling led DePauw with 60 kills and a .390 attack percentage and also had 22 blocks and three aces.

Cross country

* ISU men move up, women still 12th — Indiana State’s men moved up two spots while the Sycamore women remained the same in the Great Lakes Region rankings released Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Golf

* Rose women compete — At Bloomington, Ill., the Rose-Hulman women finished 20th at one of the nation’s most competitive women’s golf tournaments, the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational, on Saturday and Sunday.

Soccer

* U12 Purple wins twice — The Terre Haute Flyers U12 girls Purple picked up two road victories, 3-0 at Columbus on Saturday and 2-0 at Fishers on Sunday.

Audrey Baker, Andrea Kerschner, Sydney Woodason, Karlie Kellett, Camryn Wilkey and Megan Benefiel led the defensive effort. Elizabeth Humphrey had two goals and Amani Brown one on Saturday, with Brittney Nikirk and Orian Roshel scoring Sunday with assists from Brown and Kathleen Ming.

Auto racing

* Clayton prevails — At Haubstadt, Daron Clayton was the feature winner in USAC-MSCS racing Saturday at Tri-State Speedway.

Clayton led the final five laps to win the 40-lap  A-Main sanctioned by both USAC and Midwest Sprint Car Series. Kyle Larson was second and Robert Ballou third.

Sullivan native Chase Stockon won the B-main and took 10th in the main. He remains ninth in the USAC sprint point totals while Dave Darland maintained the lead going into the 4-Crown Nationals this week.

Trent Young won the feature for modifieds.

* Bumgardner posts win — At Putnamville, David Bumgardner was one of the winners in final points racing Saturday at Lincoln Park Speedway.

Bumgardner won his heat and the main for bombers. Other winners were Scotty Weir in sprint cars, Steve Peeden in super stocks and Brian Hayden in modifieds.

Fan Appreciation Night is scheduled this week with a full schedule of racing.

    “For a second, I thought he was having a seizure,” senior starting guard Austin Weatherford said with a straight face later.
