Rose women top Mount St. Joseph

CINCINNATI — Rose-Hulman improved to 4-4 on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball season with a 66-52 victory over Mount St. Joseph on Saturday.

Sophomore Lauren Meadows paced four Engineers in double figures with a career-high 23 points.

Junior Alisa Dickerson added a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds on 10-12 from the free throw line.

Freshman Heather Finnell also reached double figures with 14 points and a team-high four assists.

Senior Donna Marsh pitched in with a double-double featuring 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Rose-Hulman shot 44 percent from the field and pulled away in the second half with strong free-throw shooting to earn its second consecutive conference victory. The Engineers finished 20 for 24 from the free throw line and have hit 49 of their last 53 free throws over two games.

The Engineers held a 27-24 advantage, before Mount St. Joseph responded to gain a 32-28 lead at the 17:35 mark. Rose-Hulman answered with a 14-2 run to earn a 42-34 lead on two straight layups by Marsh at the 12:11 mark.

Freshman Kelsey Ploof helped Rose-Hulman’s lead reach double figures at 50-40 on a layup with 6:42 left. Mount St. Joseph closed within six points twice down the stretch but solid free throw shooting by the Engineers proved the difference down the stretch, as Rose-Hulman hit nine of 10 free throws in the final minute.

Rose-Hulman improved to 6-9 overall and 4-4 in league play with the victory, while Mount St. Joseph dropped to 3-11 and 3-5 in HCAC play.  The Engineers return to action on Wednesday at conference leader Hanover College.
